Text: “Be watchful, stand firm in the faith, act like men, be strong.” - 1 Corinthians 16:13
This morning, on my way to work, I stopped to buy beans cake (akara). I noticed something: six ladies passed by, all dressed professionally - suits, office skirts, heels - clearly heading to work.
But the akara seller? A man.
While I stood there, two more men passed:
- One looked like he had just finished a night shift, wearing a jacket, tired eyes.
- The other, a familiar face from the neighborhood, stopped to greet the akara seller.
As I continued my walk, I saw more people - men and women - in professional attire. And then it hit me: the world is changing.
Shifting Roles in Real Time
Jobs and responsibilities that were once considered “traditionally women’s roles” are now being filled by men. Meanwhile, women are increasingly occupying roles we once thought were “traditionally men’s roles.”
A lady once argued with me about this. She said:
“Men can’t do it alone anymore. The cost of living, the kind of schools we want for our kids, housing in cities… life has changed. It’s not about tradition — it’s about survival.”
She has a point.
The Data Doesn’t Lie
Research shows that globally, more women are getting higher education than men. If this trend continues - and in some places we’re already there - more women will be qualified for higher positions in business, government, and leadership than men.
This is not bad in itself - but it changes the playing field.
(Have in mind also it's not a level playing field, as there are also more organizations supporting women's education than men's.) So your strategy needs to be in-depth and strategic, e.g., financing of the education.
So, What Should a Christian Man Do?
The Bible didn’t tell us to hold on to cultural roles; it told us to hold on to Christ. But it also gave us clear instructions on responsibility, work ethic, and leadership in our homes and communities.
Here are three things every Christian man must do in this changing world:
1. Upgrade Your Mind
Proverbs 4:7 says: “Wisdom is the principal thing; therefore get wisdom: and with all thy getting get understanding.”
If women are pursuing education and skills, you cannot sit idle. Learn. Grow. Read. Train. Acquire knowledge - both spiritual and practical.
2. Lead with Value, Not Just Position
Leadership in the kingdom is not about a title - it’s about service and example (Mark 10:43-45).
If you want to remain relevant in a world that’s shifting, bring value - in your work, in your home, in your ministry.
3. Adapt Without Compromising
Romans 12:2 says: “Do not be conformed to this world, but be transformed by the renewing of your mind.”
Yes, the world is changing - and some changes are good. But never let the shifting culture erode your biblical convictions. Adapt in skills, not in sin.
Final Word to My Brother
Brother, don’t complain about the “good old days” - they are not coming back. The world is moving. The rules are changing. If you stand still, you’ll be left behind.
Be a man of faith, wisdom, and value. Whether the akara seller or the CEO, make sure you are useful in whatever space God puts you - and let your identity be rooted in Christ, not just in tradition.
